Paradise!!!
Woah, I honestly think I found paradise!!! The island of Nuku Hiva in the Marquises has my heart from the moment I got here. I stepped off the plane and the island looked like a desert hut during our almost two hour drive to the house the island quickly changed from desert to pine trees to tropical forests and more.
Monday: Got up early and made our way to the house of one of the mami's in our ward so I could have one last meal with her before I left. Then we went into town and had a blast chilling. Stopped at a few different shops and then got back to our car and there was a ticket.... like whaaaat? Elder Moriniere was like "Well, that's never happened before". Went to the police department and they were like you don't pay here you gotta go to another area. We finally found the area and went in and the Boss lady was like "Elders, What'd you do this time". She ended up paying for our ticket and we were just like what a miracle. Later that evening we had an amazing last family home evening with a few families in our ward and had a killer dinner.
Tuesday: Woke up at 4:30am, made it to the airport got in line to check in and then they let me cut to the front because my flight was gonna board in 15 minutes. After got in line for security and was like oh no I got 5 minutes before my flught boards and this line isn't moving. Said another quick prayer and was hoping for a miracle and then security decided to open up another line and a minute after I got through I was boarding the plane. Cheeeee two miracles first thing in the morning. Got off the plane and immediately loved it. The nature, the beaches, the people here everything is just the best. Had a lesson with a lady who was going crazy. She was yelling , crying and perfectly fine all at the same time. Our cars name is Feed and everytime Elder Lane hits a curb he's like "Bro Fred just ate that thing!!!" Safe to say Fred has eaten a lot of curbs...
Wednesday: Started off our day trying to find this lady and no one in the neighborhood knew who she was. Turns out the name she gave us was the name of her newborn so no one in the neighborhood knew the name. Taught a little lesson then went and visited some inactive members. Taught another lesson to a guy named Ioane later on in the day and Nuku Hiva was straight up popping off in it's beauty and I was mesmerized. We filled up water for some families because the water in our village is brown and no one drinks out of the tap. Later that night we ate with our next door neighbor and got him to search up electric slide, cupid shuffle, cha cha slide, and dancing queen we then started dancing along.
Thursday: Tried to go around visiting the different people in the different presidencies but no one was at home because it was a holiday.
Friday: Went to a Catholic funeral where everything was said and sung in Marquisian, that was pretty cool. Picked up some things to clean our car. Oh and got a call and they told us we're getting a dryer on the next ship that sails here... Luiaaaa le miracles. Filled up more water for people and then dropped the water off.
Saturday: Cleaned and washed our truck and then he instantly got dirty which was a little sad. Had district council on a saturday and Elder Lane was trying to catch chickens in the middle of it since we were on zoom. Filled up and dropped off more water. Started a lesson and then a member took over the lesson and kept talking with our friend and then the member closed the lesson before my companion even got to say a single word in. He pretty much testified at the very end and then was just like what happened.
Sunday: Got up and talked in church and everyone was in such a good mood. Met my family... or this lady whos3last name is also Ellis. Her husband is an Ellis from california and he's not a member. Who knows, maybe I'll get my "uncle" coming to church. Went and filled up a few hundred more liters of water and some big containers full of water and dropped them off.
Highlights:
- All in all the island is beautiful and the people here are so nice and welcoming.
- Did a little bit of language study and used death in three different languages but the sentence only makes sense in marqesian. "Ua mate i te make i pohe" The monkey died in March. Mate is death in marqesian, make is death in Hawaiian but also monkey in marqesian, and pohe is death in Tahitian but the month march in marqesian.
-Driven 250km in the past 5 days.
- Elder Lane rolled down his window and pet a horse. I then tried roling down my window and petting the horse when we returned and he almost bite me. I was just like "Oh no, not a nice horse... Elder Go, Go, Go"
Lowlights:
- No more hot water
- No Dryer
- We have brown water through our pipes
Spiritual Thought:
Smile more and be more happy. There is so much to be happy about in this life and we can't get caught up in all the small things. Also smile more because happiness is contagious. If you're happy it will cause other people to be happy as well.
